The 50% rule (and its fine print)

The classic rule: if a repair costs more than half the price of a comparable replacement, think hard about replacing. It's a good starting point — but age matters just as much. A $200 repair on a 4-year-old washer is easy money. The same repair on a 14-year-old washer that's already had two other fixes? Different conversation.

When repair usually wins

• The appliance is under 8 years old and this is its first major problem
• It's a simple, known failure — pumps, belts, elements, thermostats, door seals
• It's a high-end unit that was built to be serviced

When replacement usually wins

• Compressor or drum failures on older, budget-grade machines
• Repeat breakdowns — the third repair rarely makes financial sense
• Rust-through, control board failures on discontinued models, or damage that voids safety
